October in the garden and the nursery:

Spring is finally upon us and there are literally hundreds of things that you can do in the garden. Our biggest suggestion is simply to get out into your garden and enjoy it as much as you can!

Here are some ideas to inspire you, but it is far from an exhaustive list. Come in and talk to us or just see what we have on the tables for more ideas.

What to do in the Garden:
- Most annual, biennial and perennial plants can go in this month as seedlings, cuttings or divisions.
- As dormant winter plants start to shoot, give them a slow-release fertilizer like blood and bone with potash.
- Remove weeds and grasses growing around fruit trees.
- Apply a weekly dose of well-diluted liquid fertilizer to strawberries.
- Start to plant tomatoes - remember don’t fertilize until they start to flower.
- Don’t mulch too heavily at this time of year as it will inhibit the soil from heating up.
- Mix lots of organic matter into soil before planting anything (i.e. compost, cow manure, sheep manure)
- Add dolomite lime to areas where beans are going to be grown

Sow (from seed):

Plant (from seedling): carrots, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, parsnip, peas, pumpkin, sweet corn, tomatoes and silverbeet.
